Thurston County · October 29, 2026 This week, around Thurston County.Hello, Thurston County! This week we’re looking at what it costs to buy a lower mortgage rate, taking a closer look at Olympia’s Eastside, and making room for a little Halloween fun downtown. Speaking of making room: one Wisconsin attraction took the idea of an addition well beyond the edge of the hill. |
Here’s what’s in your four corners.
|
Finance CornerInterest rates, financing news and what the numbers could mean for your next move. Buying down the rate? Do the break-even math.7.24% National 30-year fixed average Freddie Mac · October 29, 2026 Down from 7.32% on October 22 15-year fixed average: 6.60% (previously 6.68%) |
A lower rate can make the payment easier. The question is what you’re paying to get it. Discount points are upfront costs in exchange for a lower rate. One point equals 1% of the loan amount; the rate reduction is not a fixed amount. Ask your lender for a side-by-side comparison with and without points. Then divide the extra upfront cost by the monthly savings. For illustration only: $4,000 divided by $100 a month is a 40-month simple break-even. That is not a loan quote, and it leaves out the time value of money. Will you keep that loan long enough? Would paying the points leave you short on cash for the move or repairs? A future refinance is not guaranteed. I’d rather see you compare the whole deal than chase the lowest number on the page. CFPB: how points and lender credits work → |
| Neighborhood CornerA closer look at one of Thurston County’s many neighborhoods or regions, every week. Eastside Olympia: look block by block.Olympia’s urban Eastside sits east of downtown, around the State, Fourth and Pacific corridors. It is not the same place as rural East Olympia—and Bigelow belongs to the separate Northeast area in my neighborhood guides. You’ll find a mix of older houses, cottages, postwar homes, additions and newer infill. That variety is the reason to look closely at the actual home, rather than expect one neighborhood label to tell the whole story. My suggested scouting trip: try the approach you would use from State, Fourth or Pacific, park, and spend a few minutes outside. Check the driveway, street noise, shade and drainage. A convenient dot on a map and a comfortable daily routine are not always the same thing. For an older house or an added living space, ask about permits and utility connections. Confirm jurisdiction and school assignment by address—not by the listing’s neighborhood name. Explore my Eastside Olympia guide → |
| Local News CornerHousing updates, homeowner deadlines and a few things worth getting out for. Costumes downtown. A council update in Lacey.Saturday, October 31: LoveOly Downtown for Halloween brings trick-or-treating to participating downtown Olympia shops and restaurants from 3–6 p.m. Check the organizer’s map for the participating stops; these are event hours, not a citywide trick-or-treat schedule. The pet costume contest runs 4–5 p.m. at 5th Avenue and Washington Street. Apparently the dogs also have plans. | Anything Can Happen in Real Estate CornerThe surprises, unusual homes and stories that make real estate interesting. When the addition keeps going past the hill. Most additions start with a practical problem. We need another bedroom. A bigger kitchen. Somewhere to put all this stuff. Then there’s the Infinity Room at Wisconsin’s House on the Rock. The attraction’s official guide describes a room extending 218 feet over the valley, with more than 3,000 pieces of glass. That takes “let’s open up the view” to a different level. I’m not sure I’d want to be the person cleaning all those windows. This is an established architectural attraction, not a new listing or a local property for sale. But it’s a good reminder that houses—and the people who dream them up—can still surprise you.
